Girl receives key to the city of Hattiesburg

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

Henceforth February 5 will be known as Sarah Kavanagh day.

Hattiesburg Mayor Johhny Dupree made the declaration Tuesday morning at Hattiesburg High School during a surprise assembly for Kavanagh.

The 16-year-old started a petition to challenge Pepsi to remove Brominated Vegetable Oil, also known as BVO, from orange-flavored Gatorade. The petition earned more than 200,000 signatures, and the company recently announces it will remove the element from its sports drinks.

Kavanagh says she heard the removal will start as early as the next couple of weeks.

The mayor completed the surprise assembly by giving her the key to the city. Kavanagh's family was there for her special day.
