Former USM coach Underwood passes away

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - The University of Southern Mississippi football family lost one of its own on Super Bowl Sunday. P.W. "Bear" Underwood passed away Sunday night at the age of 81. Underwood bled Black and Gold for most of his life as a player, assistant coach, and head coach for Southern Miss.

He coached the Golden Eagles from 1969 to 1974, and his team's 30-14 win over fourth-ranked Ole Miss in 1970 is arguably the greatest win in the program's history. "Bear" fittingly played on the offensive line at both tackle and guard in the mid-50s, and returned to his alma mater as an assistant coach from 1963 to 1966.

He would later be inducted to both the Southern Miss M-Club and Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame. Underwood is survived by his sons Phil and George.
