The mayor of Hattiesburg and his many counterparts are calling on legislators to pass a proposal to allow voters to raise their own taxes.
Hattiesburg Mayor Johnny DuPree and other members of the Mississippi Municipal League are meeting in Jackson. If passed, the Citizens for Economic Development Act would allow cities to build certain projects – if 60% of local citizens voted for a sales tax increase. Hattiesburg Mayor Johnny DuPree says the citizens have the right to determine their future.
"We don't raise taxes in Mississippi – at least we haven't in my city," DuPree said. "We try not to do that. This gives the citizens, thought, the opportunity to determine what projects they want, to vote on those projects and they get to determine whether to go forward with them or not."
If the bill becomes law, it would also end annual standoffs between the Legislature and local governments looking to pass measures to pay for local needs.
