HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. That's good advice from Hattiesburg Police officers who are warning residents about a new phone scam that has already victimized several Hub City residents.

Here's how it works: A resident will receive a call usually from an (876) area code advising them that they've won a new car.

In order to receive it, they must purchase a green dot credit card and load it with enough funds to cover the taxes on the vehicle.

The victim then calls back to verify the money is on the card and gives the scammer the card number. The scammer then removes the money from the card.

No prize is ever delivered.

"If you receive a phone call like that, if it sounds like it's too good to be true or you don't recall ever registering for any kind of drawing, it's probably not true," said Lt. Jon Traxler of the Hattiesburg Police Dept.

Traxler said most of the calls appear to be coming from Jamaica.

He said about a half dozen people have been victimized by the scam in the last couple of weeks.
