South Jones sets sights on States

ELLISVILLE, MS (WDAM) -

The girls soccer team at South Jones High School made some school history on Saturday, but for them, that's not quite enough.

"We began our year with our eyes set on State. We never wanted to settle for anything less," said Braves head coach Lily Trest. They'll have their chance to reach that goal Tuesday night, when they meet Pascagoula High School for the South State Championship.

Simply reaching the championship game is a first for the Braves; no other South Jones team, boys or girls, has reached a South State title. "I just got goose bumps when you said that," said a smiling Logan Simpson, when asked what it meant to be the first team to accomplish that feat. " It means so much. It's great just taking the school this far, being one of the first to make it, it's just an unbelievable feeling."

Not only are they playing in the school's first ever South State title game on the pitch...they're hosting it. "We just have to leave it all on this field, and feed off the crowd cheering for us," said the senior center forward.

The home crowd will certainly be a welcome element, considering the Braves face an 18-3 Pascagoula squad, who's also unbeaten at 6-0 in league play. "The girls feed off that energy," says Trest, "We coaches, we feed off that energy. It's going to be so great to have the backers, have the fans there, and to be playing on home turf.

"There's nothing like playing on home turf for such a big game like this."
