BASSFIELD, MS (WDAM) -

An elderly Bassfield woman was killed and her son was seriously injured in an early Tuesday morning house fire.

Authorities say Agnes Reese died in the fire at her home on Graves Keys Road.

The fire was called in by a Jefferson Davis County Sheriff's deputy at about 2:15 a.m. The first firefighters arrived with-in three-minutes of the dispatch, but by the time they arrived at the home it was already almost fully involved.

Firefighters found Reese's son outside the home. He told them his mother was still inside. Because of the intensity of the blaze, firefighters could not attempt an immediate rescue. Once they were able to gain entry the woman's body was discovered.

The son suffered serious burns from the fire and was taken to Forrest General Hospital and then airlifted to the burn unit in Brandon Mississippi where he is in serious condition.

Fourteen firefighters from Bassfield and Good Hope fought the blaze.

The State Fire Marshals Office is investigating the cause.
