A potential new store divides Laurel City Council

LAUREL, MS (WDAM) - A new Family Dollar will soon be going up in a residential area in south Laurel.

It will sit right next to the elementary and middle school on 16th Avenue and Ferrell Drive. According to Ward 1 Councilwoman, Willie Evans, having a store on that corner will cause major traffic issues and could endanger school kids.

Evans said, "To add another business there would just be detrimental to that community. The residents are not in favor of it, the school district is not in favor of it, the parents."

Ward 4 Councilman, George Carmichael supports placing a business on that corner right across from Maddox Elementary.

He along with three other council members voted on Tuesday in favor of acknowledging a court ruling that will change this section of land from residential to commercial.

Carmichael said "Safety has always been on the council minds as far as the children in the area but the developer promised that he would put several safety devices to help to the situation."

Meanwhile the city is still awaiting drawing from the developer.
