CAMP SHELBY, MS (WDAM) -

The Mississippi Armed Forces Museum at Camp Shelby will focus a lot of attention in 2013 on African-American history, women's history and even sports history.

A special photographic exhibit in February will pay tribute to the service of the all-black, 93rd Infantry Division.

In March, the 45th Women's Army Corps (WAC) Detachment will be the subject of another exhibit and in August, the spotlight will be on sports in wartime at Camp Shelby. Special emphasis will be placed on an undefeated football team from the 38th Division who won a regional championship in 1941.

"They even won an exhibition football game against what was then Mississippi Southern, now is The University of Southern Mississippi, so that's really a neat thing, a great story behind it and everything," said Chad Daniels, museum director. "The people came out from the local areas to watch the football games, the baseball games and things like that. It was really a good military community story, so we wanted to tell that," he said.

Daniels said it's getting a bit easier to tell the stories of Mississippi's war heros these days. He said as more people learn about the museum, more artifacts come in.

"We're offered many really great things and that really makes the collection here special," he said. "Because, not only are they really amazing artifacts, but they're brought here by people that want to share the story, their artifact and our history with everyone else. We don't go and purchase these things, people bring them of their own free will and that really, really adds a special dynamic to the museum," he said.

Among the special events scheduled this year is the annual "Laying of the Wreaths" to commemorate Memorial Day.
