ALBANY, GA (WALB) -
The Darton Lady Cavaliers sit in first place in the region standings at the halfway point of the season.
Their sophomore star Michelle Mitchell is a big reason why the Lady Cavs are in first place and ranked among the best junior college teams in the nation.
The Eastman native has been named the region player of the week after her efforts in two wins last week.
Mitchell scored 28 points in Saturday's road win at Georgia Highlands that put the Lady Cavs in first place by themselves.
Head coach Lea Henry was counting heavily on Mitchell and fellow sophomores Chanteniece Fann and Crystal Reed in the team's freshman lineup.
And Mitchell has delivered the offense even with defenses designed to limit her production.
"Just being a great leader on the floor and off the floor. Make sure I am doing my role in keeping everybody going and keeping everybody focused," said Michelle Mitchell.
"The thing Michelle has had to learn this year is score against a zone defense. She has figured it out. That is something we are glad to see. She is understanding now how we go away and come back here. She gets space to do what she likes to do," said head coach Lea Henry.
Darton returns home to play Atlanta Metro at 6:00 p.m. Wednesday.
