HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - The City of Hattiesburg has hired a second company, on an emergency basis, to complete dredging of the city's south sewage lagoon in hopes of finally controlling the foul odors that have been plaguing residents for the last few years. In a special called meeting Friday afternoon, Hattiesburg City Council members agreed to hire Merrell Brothers, Inc., of Mobile, to assist L and A Contractors in completing the dredging that began about eight months ago.
It's part of the city's comprehensive sewer and water improvement program. Council President Kim Bradley says both companies will be working simultaneously to remove sludge.
"There's a whole lot more there than what anyone there could have imagined," said Bradley. "There were tests that were done to the concentration of what we were trying to dredge out (and) all those numbers were off. What we're dealing with is very difficult to dry out. We're taking it out and you have to dry it out and then haul it away to dispose of it and it's become a very long, drawn out process and we've got to get through," Bradley said.
He said the dredging should be complete in about two months.
