Al Pogue, who has spent the previous two years as a quality control assistant at Auburn and has 13 years of experiencing coaching high school football in the state of Alabama, has been named the Director of High School Relations at Auburn, announced head coach Gus Malzahn Friday. In that role, Pogue will also oversee Auburn football's summer camps and clinics.

"I'm very blessed and excited for this opportunity and look forward to continuing to build relationships with the high school coaches in our state and beyond," Pogue said.  "As a former high school coach, I take great pride in this position and understand the importance of my role. I'm very appreciative to Coach Malzahn and look forward to helping him get this program back to a championship level.

Prior to his arrival at Auburn in March 2011, Pogue spent 13 years as a high school coach in the state of Alabama, 11 in the public school system and two at a private school.

"Al was a successful high school coach in this state, which makes him a great fit for the position," Malzahn said. "He is well respected among high school coaches and will do a great job strengthening relationships with coaches as well as raising the level of our camps and clinics."

Pogue, who spent 12 of his 13 years coaching in the high school ranks in Montgomery, Ala., was the head coach at Carver High School, from 2008-10 where he produced the program's first-ever undefeated regular season in 2008. He was the head coach at St. Jude High School from 2006-07, after serving as the defensive coordinator for Sidney Lanier High School (2003-05).

Pogue's first head coaching position was at Calhoun High School in Lowndes County in 2002. He began his coaching career defensive backs at Lee High School (1998-01).

While at Auburn, Pogue served as an offensive quality control assistant under Malzahn, who was the offensive coordinator at the time. This past season, Pogue worked as a special teams quality control assistant for the Tigers.

As a college football player at Alabama State from 1993-96, Pogue was a three-year starter at free safety, earning All-America and All-SWAC honors.

A native of Mobile, Ala., Pogue earned a bachelor's degree in special education from Alabama State in 1998. He and his wife, Nikita, have two children, Allison and Nasir.
