Lamar schools take precautions against flu outbreak

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

There have been 22,048 cases of flu reported by The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention from September 30 through the end of 2012.

When it comes to the flu children can easily get the virus, especially in school.

Although school just started a few days ago, the Lamar County School District is making sure all schools in the county are taking the necessary sanitary precautions to prevent the flu from spreading and having fewer students sick this year.

The district was hit by the early flu season and encountered over 9,500 students absent in the month of November.

‘It affects their attendance," said Lamar County School District Director of Student Services Wayne Folkes. "If they're not in that classroom then how do they learn?"

By providing hand sanitizers to each classroom and teaching students to wash their hands and cover to cough, the district hopes fewer students will be affected by the virus.

There have been 92 cases of the flu reported for the state of Mississippi.
