RANKIN COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Minor injuries were reported in a three-vehicle collision involving a McLaurin Attendance Center school bus and 18-wheeler Wednesday afternoon.  It happened on Highway 49 south of Florence in the northbound lanes.

Two adults and two children were transported to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to AMR.

There were some frightening moments for students aboard a Rankin county school bus when an 18 wheeler crashed into them Wednesday afternoon.

The accident occurred around three o'clock on Highway 49 near Plantation Shores south of Florence.

Rankin County school bus 395 carrying McLaurin Attendance Center students was rear ended in a three vehicle crash.

School district official said an elementary and high school student suffered minor injuries and were transported to the hospital.

Seventeen students and the bus driver were on board.

Investigators said the bus was hit from behind by a pickup truck that was rear ended by an 18 wheeler.

"Everyone was still seated at the time so no major injuries," said Corporal Heath Farish with the Mississippi Highway Patrol.

According to state troopers, the bus was stopped with its lights flashing to drop off students when the K.C. Transport tractor trailer crashed into it.

The impact crushed the left rear of the bus, mangling the last three rows of seats.

"The 18 wheeler did not realize that the flashing lights were on. It rear ended the pickup truck, pushing it off into the right shoulder of the northbound shoulder of 49. After that it rear ended the driver's side of the bus, pushing the bus into the median," added Corporal Farish.

The driver of the white truck was injured and was also transported to the hospital.

Investigators said the unidentified driver of the K.C. Transport tractor trailer was from Florida.

He was not injured and does not face charges at this time.

Traffic along Highway 49 slowed to a crawl while the school bus and tractor trailer were removed.

One lane remained open on both sides of the roadway while the crash scene was cleared.

M.H.P. investigators said that the remaining 14 students on the bus were picked up by their parents.
