The new year is bringing with it a new opportunity for misdemeanor offenders in Laurel to pay off their municipal court fines and save a little money. A reinstated amnesty program which begins Jan. 1 will give offenders a chance to clear up their cases by paying only half of what they owe on the fine portion of their penalty.
They'll still be responsible for paying all of the state assessment.
Currently, there are about 52,000 cases with outstanding fines totaling more than $15.5 million in city court.
In 2010, an amnesty program which lasted only 45 days brought in about $30,000 in fines. This amnesty period will end on March 31.
For more information about the amnesty program, call the Laurel Municipal Court at (601) 425-4711.
