Storm chasers track snow around Mid-South

PARAGOULD, AR -

(WMC-TV) - Mid-South storm chasers spent the overnight hours tracking the winter storm and giving live updates on some of the worst conditions in the Mid-South on Action News 5 Wednesday morning.

One of the hardest hit areas was Paragould, Arkansas.

"Paragould had about 10 inches," said storm chaser Nick Hellums. "About a foot or two foot of drifts."

Hellums is part of a group of storm chasers who spent Christmas night into Wednesday morning following every inch of the winter storm.

Northeast Arkansas had the most snowfall in our region.

"Kind of being the eyes and ears of the National Weather Service," said Hellums. "Paragould had about 10 inches. Where we are now in Brookline, they've got probably 10 to 11 inches, about a foot or two foot of drifts."

He continued, "Blowing snow we measured about 30 mile per hour winds up to 40 mile per hour gusts."

Without much traffic, roads were clear and manageable in Arkansas but they remained slippery and untreated.

Memphis and Shelby County got saw a light dusting but all of the winter weather, 10 inches or more in Northeastern Arkansas was enough to surprise even the most seasoned storm chaser.

"This is the most than I've seen in the Mid-South area," said Hellums. "This is just unseen around here."
