The Jones County Sheriff's Dept. brought smiles to the faces of nearly a dozen needy children Saturday morning by hosting a holiday shopping spree just for them. It was part of the first, Shop with the Sheriff at Wal Mart in Laurel.
During the event, deputy sheriffs pushed shopping carts while youngsters picked out toys and clothing.
It was all paid for by donations to the Jones County Sheriff's Dept.
"What we've been doing in years past is allowing the schools and other agencies to identify those that they felt like need a little special something for Christmas and our department would go out and get it and have them come to the office," said Alex Hodge, Jones County sheriff. "This year, we're going to allow them to (shop)...it makes it more personal," Hodge said.
"It will be a lot of help," said Jacquana Rice, whose nephew was one of the children who went shopping. "We really appreciate that he got picked out of the family," she said.
This year's Shop with the Sheriff helped 10 children.
