ELLISVILLE, MS (WDAM) -

A Jones County state senator and dozens of volunteers are spreading holiday cheer again this year by making sure that hundreds of people will have a turkey dinner on Christmas day. Sen. Chris McDaniel hosted his 8th annual turkey giveaway Saturday at West Ellisville Baptist Church.

To get a holiday bird, all you had to do was drive up to the church and say Merry Christmas.

McDaniel said he was prepared to hand out up to 500 turkeys.

"It warms my heart to be able to give, but I'm not giving anything that's really mine, I'm just giving something The Lord has blessed me with," said McDaniel. "As long as He keeps blessing me, I'll keep giving," he said.

"Well, I think it's a blessing," said Deborah Clark, one of the folks who got a turkey. "There are some people that don't have and it's a blessing that they give it to everybody," she said.

"I guess it just brings that special feeling of getting in the Christmas spirit by helping others that are less fortunate," said Tommy Barnett, a volunteer at the event.

Barnett was one of about 40 volunteers who helped with the giveaway.
