HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

Dozens of South Mississippians gathered at Hattiesburg City Hall Friday to remember homeless people who've died this year. Candles were lit during a service to mark National Homeless Persons' Memorial Day.

It was hosted by the Hattiesburg Coalition for Homelessness and Pine Grove Behavioral Health Services.

It's the seventh year for the ceremony in Hattiesburg.

"This year, we have about 8 people in Hattiesburg that we've lost to their homelessness and we take a moment to remember them and to try to find ways that we can help diminish homelessness in our community," said Kathy Garner, chairperson of the Pine Belt Coalition on Homelessness.

Also during the service, prayers were said for the victims of last week's school shooting in Connecticut.
