Greene County church donates hundreds of Christmas gifts to needy children

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

While many surrounding counties have a program to help children and families for Christmas, in Greene County they don't. So in Leakesville the United Methodist Church took it upon themselves to create The Blessing Tree Project.

"We started this project about three years ago and we're assisting needy families in our county because unfortunately we have some people that need some help and it's especially hard for them around the holidays so we work to make this project happen,” said volunteer Shelley Eubanks.

By working together, the Leakesville United Methodist Church helps provide gifts the children are hoping to find under the Christmas tree, as well as essential items the families might need.

Not only were more than 200 children helped, but thanks to the church and the community, more than 90 families in Greene County were helped, and more than 1,000 gifts were donated and distribute.

"It’s a way to give back to the community,” said Shelley. “If we're blessed I think it's our responsibility to help others. I think that's what it's all about; it’s the spirit of Christmas."

This year The Blessing Tree Project exceeded the number of local children who were helped last year.
