HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

Dozens of deserving children in the Hattiesburg area will have a much happier Christmas, thanks to many good-hearted folks who attended an annual event Saturday night hosted by a long-time legislator. Lots of needy children will be playing with toys or reading from educational materials donated by guests attending Rep. Percy Watson's 24th annual Appreciation Gala.

The toys are being donated to three organizations which will distribute them for Christmas...the Jesse L. Brown Elks Lodge, Christian Services, Inc. and P.A.C.E. Headstart.

"It is primarily a charitable function and the people who come here tonight out of the goodness of their heart, they give generously back to this community," said Watson.

Three prominent citizens were also recognized at the gala. They were Hattiesburg mayor Johnny Dupree, physician Dr. Kate Aseme and civil rights pioneer Peggy Conner.
