2013 should be a busy year for Camp Shelby, despite the fact the post is no longer mobilizing large brigades for overseas deployments. Mississippi Adjutant General Augustus Collins says in the next year, Camp Shelby will continue to mobilize soldiers, but they will be part of smaller formations with specialized duties.
The post will continue to host large National Guard forces from Mississippi, Tennesee, Louisiana and Alabama for annual training.
"It's not the large formations that we did back in 2005, '06 and '07, it's smaller formations that have specific missions that they will do in Afghanistan or in Kuwait, said Collins. "So, the big mobilizations will reduce, but the training for future engagements will continue," he said.
Collins was the keynote speaker for Saturday's Challenge Academy graduation.
