HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

After completing the 10 week crime prevention program, the Hattiesburg Police Department hosted its annual D.A.R.E. graduation for eight 6th grade schools in the Hattiesburg area.

More than 400 students graduated from the D.A.R.E. program and after writing an essay on what they learned throughout the program many of them left home with medals, plaques and even a bicycle.

“We do this for the children because for long we were considered to be the bad guys in the community,” said Hattiesburg Officer Cedric Brown. “It helps us bridge the gap between us and the kids and also teaches the kids the right from wrong when it comes down to crime and also drugs.”

Along with the D.A.R.E. program, the HPD also has a P.A.L.S. program which is after school.
