The Department of Public Safety honored a Lufkin state trooper and Texas Ranger Tuesday in their efforts to put a serial killer behind bars.

Cpl. Bryan Henry and Ranger Steven Rayburn were also recognized in a letter from the chief of Anchorage Police for the arrest of Israel Keyes.

Henry pulled over a white Ford Focus in March when authorities learned it was what Keyes was driving. Henry, along with Rayburn, obtained enough information during the traffic stop to search the Ford Focus.

Keyes was arrested in connection to the February slaying of Anchorage barista Samantha Koenig, who was abducted from the coffee stand where she worked. Investigators say the 18-year-old was raped and strangled, her body left in a shed outside Keyes' Anchorage home for two weeks while he went on a cruise.

Investigators connected Keyes to the car while tracking ATM withdrawals from Koenig's debit card.

Keyes was staying at a hotel in Lufkin and had attended his sister's wedding in Wells.

Keyes was found dead earlier this month after slitting a wrist and strangling himself with a rolled up sheet in his Anchorage jail cell, where he was awaiting trial next year in Koenig's slaying.

Before his death, Keyes also confessed to four murders in Washington state, two in Vermont and one on the East Coast with the bodies disposed of in New York over the past decade. There also could be three additional victims, for a total of 11 murders, according to the FBI.

Henry and Rayburn were honored at a Public Safety Commmission meeting.
