WDAM Viewpoint- Be a Santa to a Senior

Posted: Updated:

Various programs such as the Angel Tree Project, Christian Services and many others are successful in helping many disadvantaged children who otherwise wouldn't have anything to enjoy a Merry Christmas through the generosity of many local people.  Unfortunately, a group that is all too often forgotten or neglected are the Senior Citizens who are in desperate need and often alone.  According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 9 percent of U.S. seniors 65 and older are living in poverty and 27 percent are widowed.  Be a Santa to a Senior was founded by Home Instead Senior Care in 1994.  They have had a Christmas tree in the Turtle Creek Mall with ornaments bearing the names and need requests of seniors since early November.  Over 60 seniors ornaments remain on the tree and some who took names have not returned with gifts.  The tree comes down tonight…but it is not too late.  Many of the requests are for simple items like socks or t-shirts.  To find out how you can still contribute contact Wanda Murphy, RN at 601-520-4521.  You will be given instructions on how to help.  To find out more about this badly needed program you can go to their website www. beasantatoasenior.com  Please—don't forget the elderly this holiday season.
