BILOXI, MS (WLOX) -
A Biloxi woman was convicted Tuesday of hoarding cats, and was sentenced to 100 hours of community service.

Dawn Summers, 78, was found guilty of harboring more than six adult animals (over the age of six months), which violates the City of Biloxi ordinance 412.

According to the ordinance, it is unlawful for any person to:

Permit or allow more than six domesticated animals, over the age of six months, in any one yard or open premises of a residence of the owner of such animals or premises at any one time, and such animals shall at all times be leashed or enclosed in a fence and shall not be permitted to run at large in violation of other provisions of this article;

Officials said Summers, who owns three dogs, is a caretaker of a colony of feral cats, which she had spayed/neutered, and vaccinated for rabies. The estimated 12-20 cats push her over the six domesticated animal limit.

Summers was sentenced to 100 hours of community service at any agency providing for the care of animals within the next six months. She was also sentenced to two years probation, during which period she can't interfere with animal control officers performing their duties.

Her attorney said she plans to appeal the conviction.
