A Brooklyn man died Friday morning after crashing his car into a concrete water culvert.
At 4 a.m., S M Tony Garza, 22, also known as TJ, crashed his 2012 Kia Optima into a concrete water culvert. The culvert was one of many that were staged off the side of the road in a construction zone on the Brooklyn to Janice Road. Garza apparently lost control of his vehicle and left the road and hit the culvert. The accident happened just a few hundred feet from his parents home where he was staying.
Garza was a specialist in the Louisiana Army Reserve out of Baton Rouge, LA. and was in the process of joining the Alabama National Guard. He had spent a year in Iraq in 2010 and 2011 with the 344th Maintenance Company.
Garza's mother Nancy Garza and sister Liberty Barefoot said he was very outgoing, never met a stranger and had countless friends. They added he was very respectful and just was a very special person.
The Garza family also said he was engaged to be married.
It is not known how the accident occurred, authorities said at the scene.
