In a nutshell expect a family oriented, Christmas-filled evening on December 7th in downtown Montgomery.
The governor's tree lighting will kick off festivities at 5:15p.m. This year's theme is "Every light a prayer for peace," followed by the Capital City Christmas parade at 6:00p.m.
The parade route is from the Capitol steps to the Court Square fountain. The streets around the Capitol steps are closed starting Thursday night. Friday at 4p.m. the streets around the staging area which is near Cramton bowl will be closed.
"And then around 5:30 they are going to close down all the streets around the parade route," City of Montgomery Public Relations Administrator Carol Gunter said.
Gunter says the parade will have around 100 entries. Attendees at this year's parade will see actors and actresses dress as fairy tale and popular cartoon characters, plus hear college and high school marching bands.
"We have a Mardi Gras float in the parade this year and we a couple of new floats from outside Montgomery so we're really excited about that," Gunter said.
The mayor's Christmas tree lighting will take place at the conclusion of the Christmas parade, around 7:30p.m. at Klein park, directly across from the fountain.
"And so as soon as Santa goes through, pass the fountain, he'll go up on stage and he'll call all the kids and they come up and they count down and he just loves that. He loves to engage all the children and everyone around," Gunter said.
Also new this year is the location of handicapped seating. It will be at the corner of Commerce and Montgomery street. Bleachers will be set up there. Also, only those with handicapped stickers or tags will be able to turn onto Commerce for parking.
There will be food vendors along the parade route starting at 5:30p.m.
