HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Author and civil rights activist James Meredith was at Main Street Books Monday signing copies of his recent book, "A Mission from God".
Meredith is a native of Kosciusko Mississippi. In 1962 he became the first African-American to attend the University of Mississippi. He also attended Jackson State, the University of Ibadan in Nigeria, and Columbia University.
In the summer of 1966 Meredith organized the March of Fear, a civil rights march from Tennessee to Mississippi. At the beginning he had a brush of death when he was shot by a sniper.
In the book Meredith writes about what he calls the truth about the civil rights movement in Mississippi in 1962.
Meredith is also the author of "Three years in Mississippi, a book detailing his experiences in the south during the civil rights movement.
