A prison van collided with a Forrest County School Bus Friday at 7:30 a.m. on Hwy 49.
The accident occurred near the Hwy 42 intersection leading to Sumrall. Both vehicles were headed south.
The van was carrying on driver and 13 passengers and overturned, landing in the median. First responders transported the passengers to a local hospital. Five were treated and released. Five were admitted and are in good condition. As of the late afternoon the remaining four were still being evaluated.
The school bus is designated as number eight. Forrest County Superintendent Brian Freeman said there were two students on the school bus when it was rear ended. He added, emergency responders checked the children at the scene and found no apparent injuries.
The school bus driver was not hurt. The bus was drivable, but did have rear end damage and a shattered window.
Rawls Springs volunteer firefighters arrived first at the scene. AAA Ambulance service arrived soon after with several ambulances. The Mississippi Highway Patrol, Forrest County Sheriff's Department, Hattiesburg Police Department and North Forrest Volunteer Fire Department also responded.
