Sheriff's officials say James Thornhill, 72, turned himself in Tuesday and was released on his own recognizance. Laurel businessman and former firefighter Ken Keys opened his mayoral campaign office on Wednesday.
During the holiday season many pets end up getting abandoned or brought to the shelter because their owners can't afford to care for them anymore.
In attempt to relieve some of the financial burden for some pet owners the Southern Pines Spay and Neuter Clinic and Adoption Center is conducting a "Home for Holidays Pet Food Drive" from now until the end of the month.
Pet food donations can be dropped off at the clinic on Hardy Street, Affinity Retreat on Oak Grove Road, Moore's Bicycle Shop on Hardy, the Second Hand Thrift Store on Broadway Drive, and the Oak Grove Public Library on Old Highway 11.
Distribution of the pet food will be held around the middle of December. The location has not yet been determined.
"People are getting help with food throughout the holidays, what about the pets? There is a high influx of pets being surrendered to the shelter throughout the holidays, said Brittany McAlister, Adoption Center Manager. "This may help some families keep their pets in their home."
