(RNN) – A spokesman for House Speaker John Boehner said he received a letter of resignation from Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr., D-IL, on Wednesday, according to the Associated Press.

The spokesman would not comment further.

Jackson, 47, has been in and out of the Mayo Clinic since June, receiving treatment for bipolar disorder and gastrointestinal issues. He returned to his Washington home in September only to return in October.

He left the clinic a second time in November, the AP reported.

Jackson won re-election to his House seat Nov. 6, despite little communication with his constituency except for a robocall asking for their patience.

A special election will be held to fill Jackson's seat. The election must be held within 115 days after the seat is vacated, according to Illinois law.

The House Ethics Committee has been investigating whether Jackson was involved in the Rod Blagojevich scandal in 2008, following the accusations the governor tried to sell President Barack Obama's former seat in the Senate. Jackson denied any wrongdoing, but police investigators claimed one of his former campaign fundraisers offered to raise $1.5 million for Blagojevich in return for Jackson's Senate appointment.

Jackson, the son of famed civil rights leader Jesse Jackson, has served Illinois' 2nd district in the House since 1995. He won the seat in a special election.

Prior to joining Congress, Jackson took part in his father's presidential campaigns and worked in the offices of the Rainbow Coalition.
