Veterans were thanked for their service to the country Thursday at the Forrest County Center of Pearl River Community College. An annual Veteran's Day Observance featured special student and video tributes to our servicemen and women.
Educators from PRCC and Southern Miss also reminded those in attendence about the importance of the upcoming holiday.
"I think ceremonies like this today are very important for these students to see that people are dying for their freedom even today," said Dr. Benny Hornsby, a Navy veteran and chair of PRCC's Social Sciences Dept.
"Veterans are everywhere," said Dr. Andrew Wiest, a professor of history at USM. "They're often unnoticed members of our community, because they often don't talk about their experiences in the war. They often don't publicize who they are, but they're out there and we actually do owe our freedom to these people," he said.
The school also spotlighted the service of PRCC graduate Donald O'Quinn, an Army officer who was killed in a military helicopter crash in 1988.
