Hundreds of Hub City residents attend Governor's Job Fair

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Hattiesburg's unemployment rate is 10 percent as of September, but a job fair may put a dent in that number.

The Governor's Job Fair made a one-day stop at the Lake Terrace Convention Center in Hattiesburg Wednesday morning.

According to Director of the Governor's Job Fair Network of Mississippi,  Adam Todd this job fair is unique, because it attracts local employers who are not only hiring, but will make a job offer on the spot.

Forty-nine employers, from the Pine Belt and the coast, attended the fair. According to Todd, more than 500 people got the chance to attend. Todd added this job fair is very successful. He says last year there were more than 130 job offers. Todd attributes that success to the personal aspect of the fair.

"Here the employer is actually able to sit down look at someone, have a conversation with someone. The selection process can begin immediately," said Todd.

"We have a marketing position available, we have a sales position available, and we're also looking for positions in our technology department," said Trustpoint Outside Saleswoman, Priscilla Mangum. "It's going to be a hard decision to fill these positions, because we have so many great potential candidates."

Todd says the network holds about 20 job fairs a year. To get next years schedule please visit www.jobfairs.ms.gov
