A human smuggling attempt was foiled in southwestern Arizona Tuesday after the suspect's vehicle got stuck on top of a 14-foot high border fence.
U.S. Border Patrol agents said the suspects fell prey to their own devices.
Just after midnight, agents patrolling in the Imperial Sand Dunes area near Yuma encountered the Jeep Cherokee snagged on the fence.
The human smugglers had attempted to drive over the boundary by using a makeshift ramp not quite up to the task, agents said. When the vehicle made it to the top of the ramp, it became high centered.
Two of the vehicle's occupants fled into the desert. After removing the Jeep from its lofty perch, agents seized both the vehicle and the ramps.
In 2007, Border Patrol agent Luis Aguilar was killed near the same area when he was deliberately struck by a vehicle while attempting to deploy a controlled tire deflation device.
Citizens can report suspicious activity and remain anonymous by calling the Border Patrol at 1-866-999-8727 toll-free.
