SENATOBIA – The 11th-ranked Northwest Mississippi Community College Rangers defeated the 18th-ranked Jones County Junior College Bobcats 40-31 here Saturday afternoon at Ranger Stadium/Bobby Franklin Field.
Northwest quarterback Domonique Harris found Derrell Lovelady in the back of the end zone for a 7-yard touchdown pass with 44 seconds left to give the Rangers a 34-31 lead.
The Rangers added an insurance touchdown when Randolph Williams recovered a Bobcat fumble at the JCJC 2 and walked into the end zone for a score.
JCJC ends the year at 6-3 overall and tied Co-Lin and Mississippi Gulf Coast at 5-1 in the MACJC South Division. However, the Bulldogs beat East Central on Saturday and earned the top seed in the South Division by virtue of the tiebreaker. Co-Lin is the No. 2 team in the division, having defeated the Bobcats 33-29 earlier in the season.
The Bobcats got a 36-yard touchdown pass from Ethan Hamilton to JaMichael Willis and touchdown runs of 1 and 9 yards from Rueben Ducksworth in the first half and led 21-20 at halftime.
JCJC had a 44-yard field goal from McLaurin in the third quarter and took the lead with just 3:15 left in the game when Jovontae Thurmon scored on a 17-yard option run.
But the Bobcats could not hold on at the end.
Ducksworth rushed 24 times for 170 yards and two scores. He ends the year with 1,091 yards on the season.
Northwest is now 7-1 and will travel to Mississippi Gulf Coast next week in the opening round of the playoffs.
