HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

Hattiesburg Police are investigating the theft of hundreds of dollars of donations to the African-American Military History Museum. Museum administrators said sometime Wednesday night or early Thursday morning, an unknown number of thieves broke into the museum by climbing through a window.

They then stole the donation container from the reception area.

Administrators said the suspects had apparently visited the museum hours earlier and had unlocked the window. No damage was done to the building or any of the exhibits.

"The only way many people can say thanks for this museum is to make a donation and so in my book, what they've stolen were the thank you notes from the people who enjoyed one of the fine area attractions and museums and that's really disappointing," said Rick Taylor, executive director of the Hattiesburg Convention Commission.

Taylor said they've already taken steps to upgrade their security.

The museum opened in 2009.
