HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

Hattiesburg city officials, police officers, firefighters and other city employees gathered at the fountain at City Hall Friday morning to support efforts to fight breast cancer and increase awareness of the disease.

During a brief ceremony, Mayor Johnny Dupree issued a proclamation recognizing October as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

That was followed by the release of about two dozen pink balloons.

Dupree's wife, Johniece, is a breast cancer survivor.

She was first diagnosed in 2008.
