JONES COUNTY, MS (WDAM) -

THE FOLLOWING IS A PRESS RELEASE FROM THE JONES COUNTY FIRE COUNCIL

By: Linda Crawford

A driver of a Ford F-150 pick-up truck was critically injured Thursday afternoon, October 25, in a bizarre accident on Interstate 59 just inside the Jasper County line.

Barnett Wrecker Service from Laurel was assisting a disabled 18-wheeler that was parked on the side of I-59 in the emergency lane when the accident occurred.  According to members of the wrecker service and the driver of the 18-wheeler, the pick-up truck left the road several hundred feet from the parked 18-wheeler veered into the emergency lane before plowing head-on into the rear of the parked 18-wheeler.  The 18-wheeler driver was repositioning the hazard cones behind the 18-wheeler and said, "I was motioning him to get over, but when he passed me his eyes were focused straight ahead and he was gripping the steering wheel with both hands as if he couldn't let go."

Jones County deputies and an off-duty paramedic arrived on scene and pulled the driver out of the back window of the pick-up and began CPR.  Rescue units from Sandersville and Sharon VFD were dispatched to the scene as well as rescue units from Jasper County.  The driver was transported to South Central Regional Medical Center by EMServ ambulance service in what appeared to be critical condition.

The pick-up had a Florida tag and the identity of the driver is unknown at this time.

Also responding to the scene was Jones County Fire Coordinator Dan McKenna, Jasper County Sheriff's Department, Heidelberg VFD and Jasper County Emergency Management Agency director Mike Lucas.
