Southern Eye Center holds "Make a Difference Day"

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

Twice a year the Southern Eye Center of Hattiesburg offers free cataract procedures for people who are unable to afford the surgery.

Around 15-people were chosen to take part in the program. They were recommended to the eye center by their personal eye doctors.

The procedure takes between five and fifteen minutes depending on the severity of the cataract. Recovery time is minimal, with sight beginning to improve with-in minutes of the surgery.

Dr. Kiper Nelson from the eye center says having the surgery can be a life changing experience for many of the patients.

"The patient that was here earlier before our interview had not been able to work for five years and as you can imagine that affects the economics of the household," said Nelson. "It also affects your self esteem, it affects everything. He's starting a new job Monday in anticipation of having his vision back."

In February Southern Eye Center holds the "Gift of Sight" event where more free cataract surgeries are performed.
