LUMBERTON, MS (WDAM) -

Lumberton Mayor Miriam Holder issued a proclamation Thursday morning designating October as Domestic Violence Awareness month in the city.

Domestic Violence Awareness month is designed to help victims by bringing awareness on how to break the cycle of abuse. The cycle include the tension building phase, explosive, physical beating phase and the loving phase. Unless the cycle is broken, it will continue. The abuse will become more explosive and it will become more frequent and severe.

"The proclamations are important to let victims know help is available," said Becky Sims, Executive Director, Domestic Abuse Family Shelter. As far as our organization is concerned it increases awareness so that our service can be well known and it's important to get the word out especially in the smaller counties."

The Domestic Violence Family Shelter serves 11-counties in the Pine Belt area.
