Wayne County's Hodo earns Academy Sports and Outdoors Player of the Week

David Hodo did everything asked of him and more last Friday. In his first start, not only was the sophomore quarterback asked to score against hated rival West Jones, he was asked to score on undefeated Mustangs' vaunted defense, which had surrendered less than ten points a game to that point.

Oh yeah, and on the road.

"I thought he did an outstanding job coming in, and in a tough environment, tough game, tough situation," said Wayne County Head Coach Todd Mangum.

Not only did he move the ball, he produced points. Starting in place of injured Senior Jarvis Chambers, Hodo connected on  nine of 15 passes for 147 yards and three touchdowns, while rushing for 56 yards on 11 carries in his team's 28-7 win at West Jones.

"He played really good for us on Friday," said Mangum

And make no mistake, Hodo stepped in for a player who knows a little about scoring for the War Eagles. Before his recent knee injury, Chambers averaged 113 passing yards a contest, and totaled 15 touchdowns over his senior season.

Mangum still had confidence Hodo would perform his role. "David had gotten reps in practice, gotten reps in games and everything," he said, "so, it was not anything unusual for him to go in and play, but it was just a little different him starting the game."

Wayne County is now one of the hottest teams in the Pine Belt. Their most recent win over the previously unbeaten Mustangs is their sixth straight after an 0-2 start, with a home date against South Jones on the docket for this Friday.
