A Hattiesburg organization which helps young people grow into good citizens is now getting some financial help to grow some good food, too. Tuesday evening, the Oseola McCarty Youth Development Center received a $1,000 grant from Blue Cross/Blue Shield to develop its community garden project.

A check was presented by members of the Mayor's Youth Leadership Council.

The garden has already produced okra, squash, and other vegetables, which were given to local families.

"This money is going to help us with our fall planting," said Janet Baldwin, executive director of the Oseola McCarty Youth Development Center. "We do have our greens in the ground now. We have turnips, mustards and collards and we're planning to do some fruit trees as well as muscadine vines and that type," she said.

"There are young kids that actually get to see what happens and how you grow a garden," said Chloe Paige, president of the Mayor's Youth Leadership Council. "So, it really makes me happy that young people are interested," she said.

Volunteers at the center have been hosting after school programs since 2005.
