State Senator Joey Filingane and Representative Toby spoke to the Forrest County Republican Woman in Oak Grove Tuesday afternoon.
One of the hot topics was the recent federal lawsuit filed by the NAACP over the changes to redistricting in the state made in the spring. The NAACP and some state officials contend the 2011 districts do not reflect the 2010 census. The suit also asks for a special election in 2013 as lawmakers elected in 2011 under those previous boundaries will hold their seats until 2015.
Both Filingane and Barker are confident that the new redistricting lines will be upheld.
"I'm sure they will take a look at it and make sure it meets all the requirements. One person, One vote and not diluting the minority voting stream," said Filingane. "The Federal Justice Department has already looked at these issues and they have pre-cleared this plan."
"I think the house and senate already expected challenges to this. But given as the Justice Department already pre-cleared it and did not see any major problems with it . We think the plan will go into effect and we will wait to see if we run in 2015 or 2013," said Barker.
The NAACP also argue that the new voting lines are discriminatory to minority voters and should be redrawn.
