Hattiesburg swears in three new police officers

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

Three recruits were sworn in Monday by Hattiesburg Mayor Johnny DuPree.

The three men's families and friends were all present as they accepted their duties on behalf of the Hattiesburg Police Department.

"I've been waiting for a long time, and I finally got my opportunity today, and it feels great, but I'm kind of nervous at the same time," said new recruit Demetrius Breland.

"We get recruits who come in that actually want to live in Hattiesburg and want to work in Hattiesburg, and that's a good thing."

One young man sworn is from Wales.

East Marion volleyball finished 20-5 a season ago, falling to the eventual state runner-up Resurrection in the first round of the playoffs. The Eagles are hungry for more in 2017. "They have that fever," said sixth-year East Marion volleyball coach Mandell Echols. "They want to take [Resurrection's] place and end up winning the championship."
