HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

Dozens of Hattiesburg-area residents, legislators and other state and local government leaders met in Hattiesburg Thursday morning to exchange ideas in a town hall-style forum hosted by Mississippi Speaker of the House Philip Gunn.

Topics ranging from higher education to homeless pets were discussed at the Hub City stop of Gunn's Mississippi Solutions: An Ideas Tour.

That tour began on Monday in Jackson and has featured stops in Greenwood, Hernando, Tupelo, Columbus and Meridian.

"These are meetings we're having to hear ideas from the citizens," said Gunn. "We feel, very importantly, that we get the legislators out into the communities," he said.

"I think the forum is great," said Valeries Webber of Hattiesburg. "Anytime the public has an option to come in and voice their opinions to the legislators, I think it's a win-win option," she said.

"It is so nice to see the legislators actually coming to the people, instead of us having to e-mail or call or try to get in touch with them," said Katherine Sammons of Hattiesburg.

The tour ends in Brookhaven Friday.
