The command staff and soldiers at Camp Shelby are hoping to make members of the military and civilians more aware of domestic violence. Wednesday, Camp Shelby commander Col. William B. Smith signed a proclamation recognizing October as National Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
It's the first time the post has taken such a stance on the issue.
Camp Shelby officials say it's part of a zero tolerance policy for acts of domestic violence.
Col. Smith was joined in a signing ceremony by victims' rights advocates and survivors of domestic violence.
"The Army has a very detailed program for sexual assault prevention and domestic violence prevention and we are carrying that just a step further here at Camp Shelby, in an effort to prevent those types of issues here," said Col. Smith.
"I think it's going to help, as far as making sure that the soldiers and their family members know we're not going to tolerate any type of domestic violence," said Stephanie Dillon, sexual assault response coordinator for Camp Shelby.
Dillon said in September, more than 1,300 soldiers and civilian employees at Camp Shelby were trained to be aware of and respond to domestic violence, sexual harrassment and sexual assault.
