(RNN) - Actress Stacey Dash said she doesn't "understand the fury" aimed at her after she tweeted her support for Mitt Romney and that she chose to back him based not "by the color of his skin, but the content of his character."

Appearing on CNN's Piers Morgan Tonight, Dash, who is black, said she isn't offended by criticism hurled her way after she tweeted "Vote for Rommey. The only choice for your future" on Sunday. She later tweeted "My humble opinion … EVERYONE is entitled to one."

Many on Twitter responded with racially charged replies, some calling her an "Uncle Tom," using the N-word and channeling images of slavery.

"I'm shocked, saddened, not angry," she told Morgan. "You can't expect everyone to agree with you."

"I don't feel offended. I just feel that, as a country, this is my choice ... It's my right as an American citizen, it's my constitutional right to have my choice of who I want to vote for, for president."

Others on Twitter came to her defense.

"Maybe one day we will live in a country where we can select a candidate and not be ridiculed an (sic) called nasty names for it," wrote one Twitter user.

One of those who did was vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan, who tweeted "Had a great conversation with @REALStaceyDash this afternoon. Thank you for your support!"

Dash supported Barack Obama for president in 2008, but said she changed her mind this election cycle "because of the state of the country. And I want the next four years to be different."

Dash said the vitriolic replies tell her that "the state of our country is we are not united."

'We all need to understand we are all capable of achieving the American dream, but that has to be something that is self-realized. To demonize someone for achieving the American dream is unfair."

Dash is most famous for her role as Dionne in 1995's "Clueless."
