LAUREL, MS (WDAM) -

Residents in the Pine Belt joined others across the state who made their way to circuit clerks offices in order to beat a deadline to register to vote. They had until noon Saturday to register for November's general election.

Jones County Circuit Clerk Bart Gavin said there were large numbers of folks who showed up in Laurel and Ellisville to register. While in Forrest County, Circuit Clerk Lou Ellen Adams and her staff were also busy Saturday, but she said Friday was even more hectic.

"For presidential elections, it's always busier than regular elections," said Gavin. "I'm looking for at least 100 people to come in and register today," he said.

I really think we've registered more this time than we did four years ago," said Adams. "Historically, this is always the big election for us, so we're always busy, but we've really been busy this time," she said.

Circuit clerks offices in all 82 Mississippi counties were required to stay open until noon Saturday.
