The head of America's national service program was in Hattiesburg Thursday afternoon, visiting Southern Miss volunteers who mentor young people. Bill Basl, the director of AmeriCorps, met with AmeriCorps volunteers from USM who work with children at the Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club.

Basl also visited with AmeriCorps volunteers on the Gulf Coast Thursday morning.

AmeriCorps has about 700 volunteers working in Mississippi.

"(Volunteers) see themselves as individuals who can make a difference and be that caring adult that stands for a lot of these kids who desperately need a caring adult in their life," said Basl.

"We're honored to be the host site for this visit," said Marcus Williams, an AmeriCorps volunteer from USM. "I know Mr. Basl is very excited about AmeriCorps in general and we're so happy to serve in this Hattiesburg community," Williams said.

Friday, Basl will be in Jackson, to swear-in 500 new AmeriCorps volunteers who will serve all over Mississippi.
