JONES COUNTY, MS (WDAM) - Silver Airways made its debut Monday morning at the Hattiesburg-Laurel Regional Airport.
Silver replaces Delta as the commercial passenger carrier for the airport. They operate two non-stop flights a day to Atlanta Monday through Friday and one each on Saturday and Sunday.
The airline uses a SAAB 340 twin prop aircraft that offers a high level of comfort. Capacity on the plane is 34 passengers. Each flight has two pilots and a flight attendant. The plane also has a restroom.
Round trip to and from Atlanta cost $220 and the flight takes about an hour and 20-minutes.
"We're hoping this is a new day in air travel for people in the Pine Belt," said Tom Heanue, Airport Manager." For many years we've been going to Memphis and Memphis is being shut down as the hub for Delta. There sere seems to be a consensus in the area that Atlanta is a great place to go. There's a lot more connections and a lot more flights and it should be better for our customers."
Sixteen passengers took advantage of the first Silver Airways Flight out of the airport.
